Letter to the Editor - Wednesday, July 10: Build bypass soon
I TOTALLY agree with Geoff Booth, we need a bypass for Coffs Harbour urgently.
But his statement, "Coffs Harbour will soon be the only town left with heavy vehicles sharing its roads with local traffic", is slightly incorrect. When was the last time he drove through Bellingen?
Not only does our main street have to cope with local traffic, plus holiday makers often towing big vans, but also heavy refrigerated trucks, school buses, cattle trucks, huge log trucks, and more recently back-to-back quarry trucks rumbling up and down Waterfall Way and through our town centre. These are all serious accidents waiting to happen, not only in our town centre, but also on Waterfall Way, which was never built to sustain such regular heavy traffic.
We need a town centre bypass urgently, and any politician worth his/her job, should campaign for funding and planning to achieve this asap.
This volume of heavy traffic, noise pollution, and wear and tear on the main street through our village is unsustainable and needs to be diverted with a suitable ring road, and we need our council and local politicians to finally work together and come up with a long-term solution.
