Letter to the Editor - October 15: Beware blueberries

IN A recent Advocate letter to the editor, critical comments I made about the blueberry industry are not intended to be taken negatively but as cautionary. Booming industries do inevitably decline.

What deeply troubles me regarding the expanding blueberry industry is the potential for damage to large areas of bushland and wildlife. What about the tourism or real estate industries in this area that rely on people visiting and buying homes in this area because of its coastal beauty?

The Office of Environment and Heritage has confirmed in the past 12 months about 30 reports of clearing in the Woolgoolga/Halfway Creek area associated with blueberry production.

I moved to this area because it had a reasonable balance between small-scale farming, urban development and conservation.

A large-scale-farming blueberry industry will possibly change that balance and this reality is a cautionary notice for residents in this beautiful area.
