Letter to the Editor - November 29: Get back to basics

WHY do the few people who want an "edifice" called an Entertainment Centre have so much of a voice?

If it so important to the few then let them raise the funds and have it built, then let private enterprise run it, but don't expect the rate payers to build it for you.

The original idea of local council was to provide basic services such as water, garbage collection and road repair. It is time that we got back to the basics.

We do not need to pay an "Event Organiser". We do not need to pay a "Promote Tourism" person.

This council has lost its way.

Instead of providing the basic services that we need and require, they are more interested in servicing vested interests.

We cannot afford a rate increase to build an Entertainment Centre.

We cannot afford a "Special rate increase" for Council to buy Sandy Shores.

If ratepayers actually want this to happen, then expect a massive increase in your rates. Since mine run at $900 a quarter, guess where I stand.

Enough is enough. Get back to the basics that Council is supposed to provide and stop all the excess.

The tourists will come to Coffs Harbour regardless of what Council promotes.
