Letter to the Editor - July 18: Bring on more bike lanes

I WAS riding my pushbike along Harbour Dr towards town and I was passed by two utes, both of which I could have touched if I had put my arm out.

There is no cycling lane all along Harbour Dr. This brings me to the cycle lane along Bray Street.

After complaining about the cars parked all along it, I found out it is a shared cycle path and parking lane. I find this utterly absurd.

A car door opens just under a metre from the car. There is under a metre from the edge of the cycleway to the line of cars parked in it.

This means if one of the car doors is opened, a cyclist has the choice of either pulling out in front of the passing traffic or riding into the door should he not have enough time to brake.

I say please don't insult cyclists by placing them at risk of death by expecting them to share a lane with parked cars.
