Letter to the Editor - December 31: Pets are not toys

I AM NOT a toy. This time of year is especially sad for thousands of animals in pet shops around Australia.

Many of them are bought on impulse, only to be dumped when the novelty wears off.

If you are considering a pet as a gift or for yourself, why not adopt one of the desperate, lovable animals waiting for a forever home from one of your local shelters? You will gain a loyal friend and you will be saving one of 200,000 animals from death row. A pet is a lifetime commitment, if you are giving one as a present, be sure the person really wants a companion animal and can afford food, veterinary bills and has appropriate housing for all weather conditions.
