Letter to the Editor - December 31: Elephant in the room

REGARDING numerous articles this year about metadata and its keeping by telcos, there seems to be a monstrous elephant in the room about which no one is commenting.

I refer to mobile phones and internet accounts, which have no name and address attached.

Does any educated observant person doubt for even a second that the vast majority of serious crime is now committed by using such phones and internet access?

Exactly why is it necessary for some people to have anonymous mobiles? It would take only a Commonwealth regulation to ban forever these anonymous phones, which any TV viewer of crime and spy movies has seen being tossed into a river or dumpster after signalling the start or arrangement for some form of skulduggery.
