Letter to the Editor - December 17: Disturbing decision

THE decision handed down by the court relating to animal cruelty charges against the owner of four horses, 37 dogs and 22 puppies living in shocking conditions is very disturbing.   An 18-month good behaviour bond and the fact that this man is allowed to keep two desexed dogs is incomprehensible. A lifetime ban instead of a five-year ban should have been imposed as well as never being allowed to have another animal in his care. Once again the system has failed to protect these two dogs.   There have been similar cases of shocking cruelty to animals where offenders have been allowed to keep some animals, only to find after a follow-up visit to check on their welfare, they have been found dead or near death.   Our outdated laws need to be altered so decisions such as this one cannot occur.   RHONDA GREEN
