Letter to the Editor - December 10: Health not about profit
THE Abbott Government is about to give private insurers the right to tender to run its new Primary Health Networks which will oversee GP care throughout Australia.
Insurance companies, not your GP, could end up deciding how we are treated and who is eligible for treatment. The function of a health care system is to care for sick people. The function of a corporation is to provide profit for shareholders. Mixing these functions has proven to be disastrous. Primary Health Networks run by private insurers will threaten the foundation of our world-class universal health care system.
