Letter to the Editor - April 27: Greens misguided gun claims

THE Greens' irrational hatred of firearms surfaces again (Coffs Coast Advocate April 13) in the article on the level of gun ownership in Coffs Harbour.

Greens spokesman David Shoebridge trots out the discredited view more guns means more violence in the community.

David should read the 2015 report of the Senate inquiry into gun violence.

There he would find conclusive evidence from Australia and also from overseas that there is no relationship between levels of legal gun ownership and community safety.

Licenced gun owners overwhelmingly do not use their firearms for illegal purposes.

And as for the Greens' concern over stolen guns, evidence presented at the inquiry found only one in every 2500 guns was stolen - a rate of four hundredths of one percent.

Furthermore these stolen firearms were generally not used to commit offences.
