Letter to Editor - April 16: Positive climate change action

I HAVE been greatly interested to read of Coffs Coast Climate Action Group's new local project Repower Coffs a commendable initiative, which aims to make solar available to low income rental housing.

I believe they received a grant to develop this as a community project.

This is similar to an idea I spoke about as the local Country Labor candidate in the recent State Election. I would like to see government legislate investors in housing for the rental market be made to put a minimum 5kW solar system on the roofs of all newly acquired properties before they can be rented out in return for them being able to negative gear. This could later be extended to existing rental properties.

This would be a wonderful way to create employment opportunities at the same time as helping people that are renters to reduce their costs and be good for the environment, a win all round.
