League juniors eye off Shield

PRIMARY school rugby league players will converge on Rex Hardaker Oval today for the Coffs Coast Schubert Sevens Shield qualifying round.

ARL development officer Mike Castle said today’s winning team will join Dorrigo Public School in the Mid North Coast finals on June 21.

“The winner of that finals series will earn a spot at the State Legends Shield in Sydney on August 24 so it’s a very important occasion for the youngsters,” Castle said.

Play will kick off today at 10am with 15 teams representing Narranga Public, Toormina Public, Korora Public, Tyalla Public and William Bayldon Public schools competing in three competitions.

The Years Five and Six draw will feature all the top teams chasing that all-important finals berth.

A non-competitive draw has also been scheduled for Years Five and Six along with the Joey League draw that gives students in Years Three and Four a chance to represent their schools.

The next Schubert Sevens qualifying round will be played at Nambucca Heads on May 3, followed by Kempsey on May 5, and Woolgoolga on June 2.
