Leading coach blows whistle on refs

MACKSVILLE captain-coach Aaron Wood has called for the NRL to provide greater assistance to referees in the bush.

Wood, who joined the Sea Eagles this season, said something must be done to improve the standard.

"You've got referees week in, week out penalising one thing and then not doing it next week," he said.

"I don't want to blame them but they're a big part of why the fighting and all that sort of stuff is happening in Country Rugby League.

"They're slowing the game down. Blokes start pushing and it leads into a fight.

"The crowd's unhappy and it's not what the bush really needs."

The coach said he had approached the Group 2 Referees Association in an attempt to gain more clarity and consistency in the refereeing.

"Teams aren't getting a fair shake and it's about time someone stood up," Wood said.

"They need the NRL to come and help."
