Boucat takes out GromSearch title

OCEAN Shores surfer Tommy Boucat demonstrated enormous potential by winning the premium under-16 boys' final of this week's Rip Curl GromSearch on the Coffs Coast.

Boucat just about had the final sewn up when he pulled off a 9.17 ride (out of 10) for the judges after an intense early battle with Cronulla's Chris Robertson.

"I saw Robbo get some good early ones and was a little rattled, but then got that wave from mid-way out that let me do some turns," he said.

"I'm really happy to come away with the win in such a good field."

Kai Hing (Wurtulla) finished in a flurry to steal second place ahead of Robertson and James McMorland (Catherine Hill Bay), who secured the Telstra New Talent award with his gutsy fourth place.

Kirsten Ogden (Suffolk Park) started the under-16 girls' final slowly but posted 6.00 and 7.17 to give her the lead.

Stephanie Single (Lennox Head) finished fast with a 7.50 wave, but Ogden had just enough to get her home.
