Last ride ahead of nationals at CQ Schools titles

MTB: Rowallan Park is open for business again, which means the Central Queensland Schools Mountain Bike Championships are back on this weekend.

Organisers were forced to postpone the event last weekend because of the rain and, although the track is still a bit wet, it was important to host it before nationals next week.

"I would have run it at another time when the park dries out a bit more, but with the momentum we couldn't have cancelled it,” race co-ordinator Peter Lister said.

He has seen more juniors trying out the sport after the Mackay Schools relay competition was introduced earlier this term.

For the CQ Championships this weekend racers will be testing themselves in a solo event.

"It's the same amount of time but now you're not having to break for your relay partner,” Lister said.

"It steps it up so the quicker riders can shine in their categories.”

It also was a good chance for riders to see how they're going ahead of the Nationals Schools competition next weekend.

"And to pace themselves to ride the distance,” Lister said.

U13 riders will have half an hour to race, U15s 45 minutes and U18-19s will race for an hour in a circuit format.

There will be about 40 students participating, who will be eligible for selection to attend the Queensland MTB Interschool Championships on the Gold Coast from August 27-28.
