MOVIE REVIEW: Pint-sized superhero packs plenty of punch

ANT-MAN

Director: Peyton Reed

Starring: Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly

Rating: PG

Reviewer: Kathy Sundstrom

Verdict: 4 stars

WE'VE had spiders, we've had bats, but who would've thought we'd have a superhero movie with an ant?

And how could something that shrinks to easy squishing size with a finger ever hope to be in the same league as Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the Hulk?

But Marvel, the studio who brought us the larger than life (and definitely larger than insects) crew of the Avengers, has done it again.

They've created an entertaining blockbuster with all the action, drama and special effects you'd expect from a superhero movie.

And there is more. There's the quirky humour and surprise twists that make for fantastic entertainment.

Add a brilliant cast, including one of my favourite actors, Michael Douglas, and Ant-Man is a movie sure to be a big hit at the box office.

Dr Hank Pym (Douglas) is forced out of his own company by the man who was like a son to him, Darren Cross (Corey Stoll) because he wouldn't hand over his secret shrinking formula.

Years later, when he realises Cross is close to solving the mystery which could provide the world with a tiny weapon like no other, he has to find a way to steal his secrets back.

His only hope lies in a burglar who is struggling to make good, Scott Lang (Paul Rudd).

Lang even has to break in to the Avengers' studio, facing one of Iron Man's side-kicks, to achieve the goal of stealing the formula back.

Unlike some of the other Marvel films, Ant-Man is entertaining without having too much of the over-the-top action and fight scenes.

It's quirky, clever, enjoyable for all ages and well worth the cost of your movie ticket to see it on the big screen.
