Landslip forces closure of Cooks Creek Bridge and Kalang Rd
FOLLOWING the flood events caused by last week's East Coast Low, an inspection's revealed significant damage to Cooks Creek Bridge and Kalang Rd.
In the interest of public safety, the damage to Cooks Creek Bridge together with a dangerous landslip on the southern side of the bridge has left Bellingen Shire Council no option but to close the road approximately 20km south-west from Bellingen.
Signage has been erected at the bridge and arrangements are being made for a variable message board to be placed at the roundabout.
It's suggested residents living beyond Cooks Creek Bridge make arrangements to park their vehicles at the Kalang Hall. Pedestrian access will be available to residents across the bridge.
Council asks that residents exercise extreme care due to instability of the bank and the large trees within this slip area.
Unfortunately, this closure will also require changes to the school bus schedule with school children to be picked up and dropped off at Kalang Hall. The bus operator and emergency services have been advised of these arrangements.
The reopening of the road will be a high priority for Council to reduce the inconvenience to residents impacted by this closure.
