Landry shaken by close call, but praises pilot's landing

FEDERAL Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry has praised the skills of Rockhampton pilot Stephen Alley (Peace Aviation) after the pair had a close call in a light plane.

The landing gear and wheels failed to go down in the small aircraft just before it was due to touch down over Mackay Airport this week.

Ms Landry had to move her front seat far forward while the pilot climbed over the back (with plane in auto pilot) so he could manually use a crank shaft to wind down the wheels.

It took several circuits of the airport to get them in place.

Emergency response crews were on stand-by at the scene.

Air traffic control was also great to help out, the MP said.

Ms Landry said Mr Alley remained very calm and professional during the ordeal and she praised him for his skills in averting a potentially terrifying disaster.

"I have flown with Stephen and Peace Aviation before and he is extremely professional and I felt in good hands, despite having some initial concerns about how we would be landing if the wheels failed to come down," Ms Landry said.

"I can't praise Stephen highly enough for overcoming what could have been a very bad situation. It was very for concerning for me at the time.

"I'd also like to thank the emergency response team and air traffic controllers at Mackay Airport. They do a great job and are very professional."

Ms Landry was on her way to Mackay, to drive out to Nebo for a community meeting with Federal Rural Health Minister Fiona Nash.
