Land council wants to kick elder out of home of 20 years
BUNDJALUNG elder Susan Anderson is facing eviction from her Cabbage Tree Island home of 20 years for overdue rent.
Mrs Anderson said when her hot water service broke in December 2012 she approached the owners of the house, the Jali Aboriginal Land Council, to fix the problem but they refused.
Just after 9am today, three police cars escorted a sheriff and a locksmith onto the island to evict Mrs Anderson from her home and her niece, Lynette Simpson, from another home on the island.
Confronted by waiting media, the police, the sheriff and locksmith left the Island after 45 minutes as Mrs Anderson stood defiant, refusing to vacate her home.
The Northern Star is trying to get comment from the Jali Aboriginal Land Council. However, calls to the council have so far not been returned.
