Lady Cilento opening should have been delayed: Minister

AN INDEPENDENT review into the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital has found that its opening was 'rushed' and put patients' safety at risk.

Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Cameron Dick says the hospital, which was opened in November last year, should have been delayed.

"What the report found was that rushing the hospital opening put patient safety at risk," Mr Dick said.

"The fact that nothing adverse happened was due to the fantastic efforts of the staff."

The report describes clinicians waiting around loading docks in the days before the opening, hoping that vital equipment would arrive on time.

It found that clinical equipment was late arriving, staff were still being hired in the days leading up to the opening, and that the phone system wasn't working properly.

It also found only days before the opening, there wasn't enough hand gel and soap dispensers throughout the building, posing an infection risk.

It also found that linen, flow meters, and clinical consumables were still being sourced up to the day the hospital opened on November 29th, 2014.

The report says that "sufficient evidence existed in the June/July period in 2014 which should have raised sufficient corporate concern over November 29th 2014 being a realistic opening date."

Mr Dick said that the purpose of the review had been to learn the lessons for the future and to ensure that when large health infrastructure projects in Queensland are commissioned they meet world's best practice.

"We have another major hospital to commission on the Sunshine Coast next year. The findings from this report will assist in delivering a successful opening," he said.
