Labor wins Victorian state election

VICTORIAN voters created history at the weekend after the incumbent Coalition government was booted from office resulting in it becoming the state's first one-term government in more than six decades.

Outgoing Premier Denis Napthine conceded defeat to Labor's Daniel Andrews late on Saturday evening after a statewide swing of 3% against the former government.

The Greens also made history with Melbourne candidate Ellen Sandell beating Labor MP Jennifer Kanis to secure the party's first lower house seat in the Victorian Parliament.

Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said Victorians had sent Prime Minister Tony Abbott a very strong message.

"Daniel Andrews and Labor offered Victorians a clear choice at this election and Victorians have made a clear choice," he said.

"There is no doubt Victorians used this election to send Tony Abbott a clear message . . . no GP tax, no $100,000 degrees, no cuts to schools and hospitals and no more lies."

Prime Minister Tony Abbott said in a statement on Sunday the Federal Government would work with the incoming government in the interests of all Victorians.
