$171m superstar traded in NBA blockbuster

BLAKE Griffin's nine year career as a Clipper is over, with the Los Angeles franchise trading the star forward to the Detroit Pistons.

The Clippers' deal, centred on Griffin, will also send Brice Johnson and Willie Reed to Detroit, in exchange for Tobias Harris, Avery Bradley, Boban Marjanovic, a first-round pick, and a second-round pick, according to multiple reports.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski was first report on the deal.

Griffin recently signed a five-year, $171 million extension with the Clippers, and is averaging 22.6 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game for the team that drafted him with the No. 1 overall pick in 2009.

The five-time All Star will now pair with Andre Drummond, forming one of the more formidable frontcourts in the NBA, for a Pistons team sitting in ninth place in the East.

The Clippers saw significant struggles to open the 2017-18 regular season, and currently sit on a 25-24 record.

According to ESPN, the team will continue to pursue packages of young players and draft picks, in their attempt to trade DeAndre Jordan and Lous Williams.

The Pistons' recent cold stretch - losing nine straight - seemingly forced the hand of the front office to make a change, with Stan Van Gundy's deal centring on Tobias Harris, who's averaging 18.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game this season.

Avery Bradley, who the Pistons made available earlier in the day, gives the Clippers a defensive specialist on an expiring contract. He's averaging 15 points and 2.4 rebounds per game.

The deal pairs the newly-acquired Marjanovic, with Clippers point guard, Milos Teodosic, both of whom are starters on Serbia's national team.

The transaction is expected to be made official soon.
