Kitesurfer remains critical after night in hospital

UPDATE: A 49-year-old kite surfer was this morning in a critical but stable condition while being treated for an incident at Buddina Beach.

A Nambour General Hospital spokeswoman confirmed the man's condition today after he was taken there yesterday afternoon.

The man's friends had given him CPR after pulling him unconscious from the water about 2.30pm.

EARLIER: A kitesurfer was in a critical but stable condition after being pulled from the water unconscious at Buddina on Sunday afternoon.

Buderim Ambulance Station officer-in-charge Lucy Farrant said the 50-year-old man's friends were quick to start effective CPR on him.

Paramedics were called to the beach shortly after 2.30pm.

Mrs Farrant said the man's friends did CPR on him for about five minutes before the first paramedics arrived and took over.

"When the first crew got there he was unconscious," Mrs Farrant said.

They continued to work on the man for about 20 minutes before the decision was made to take him to Nambour General Hospital.

A hospital spokeswoman confirmed the man was this afternoon in a critical but stable condition.

Mrs Farrant said it was unclear how the man had been rendered unconscious.

She praised his friends for acting quickly and effectively.

"They were with him within 60 seconds of seeing him.

"That CPR no doubt makes a really big difference in these types of cases."
