Kingscliff 63-year-old fined for “mindless” graffiti

THE actions of a Kingscliff man who spray-painted his local police station were described as "mindless" in Tweed Heads Local Court on Tuesday.

Stanley Lawrence Emanuel, 63, avoided jail, but copped a $1000 fine and a good behaviour bond for the June incident

Just after 2.20am on Wednesday June 11, two police officers in the Kingscliff Police Station on Marine Pd heard the hissing of spray cans.

When they went outside, they found the slogans "Kingy Boyz Rule", "Dumb Cops" and various other "squiggles" on the exterior walls of the police station.

The two officers engaged in a "serious scuffle" with Mr Emanuel, who wore a black balaclava, black gloves and a black jacket.

It's understood one of the officers was unable to work for several weeks due to a shoulder injury which resulted from the incident.

Magistrate Geoffrey Linden read a statement from Mr Emanuel's wife, which claimed local youth would gather - particularly on Friday and Saturday nights - and throw eggs at their house.

"They would call out obscenities," he said.

"They would drive on the grass and they were doing burnouts on his grass.

"He decided to take matters into his own hands."

Mr Linden said while Mr Emanuel may have been making a plea for help, his actions were the "wrong way to go about it".

"This is just mindless desecration of public property," he said.

"It isn't police property, it's public property."

Mr Emanuel faced two counts of assault police, one count of malicious damage and one count of possessing graffiti implements.

He was handed an 18-month good behaviour bond and ordered to pay $1000 compensation to NSW Police for the June incident.

Mr Emanuel declined to comment outside court.
