A COFFS Coast man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after pleading guilty to murdering a woman during a violent domestic assault last year.
Nambucca Heads man Deon Edwards, 38, was sentenced this week after pleading guilty to the murder of Adelaide Breckenridge, 45.
Ms Breckenridge died as a result of a domestic incident at a house in Sussex Street, Nambucca, in February last year.
Police were called to the house about 8.25pm on February 24, 2008, following reports of a domestic-related incident. Inside the house officers found the body of Ms Breckenridge with multiple injuries.
A crime scene was established at the house by forensic officers from Coffs Harbour, with witnesses at the time reporting that police searched the area until the early hours of the following morning, including lifting drains and going through garbage bins as they reportedly searched for the murder weapon. Edwards was arrested at the house and charged with murder.
He has been in custody since the murder and will now serve a minimum non-parole period of 14 years for the crime.
Edwards was sentenced in Lismore Supreme Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty on March 10.
Nambucca detective, Dave Stuart, told Rural Press the outcome was positive for local police, who investigated the incident.
