Kids to miss Socceroos' opener
WHAT a scheduling masterstroke - the Socceroos' first World Cup match kicks off at the convenient time of 8am on Saturday morning.
I for one will enjoy a hearty barbecue and cheer on the green and gold with my soccer mates. Quite a contrast to waking up bleary-eyed in the witching hours and curl up for the recent editions in Germany and South Africa.
A masterstroke - until you consider who the Socceroos' most important fans are. Junior soccer players throughout Australia will miss the clash against Chile to lace up their own boots.
North Coast Football's media and communications manager Terry Allen himself will miss the clash because the Coffs Harbour-based father will be driving his son to Bellingen for a 10am under-15s match.
He said no clubs had approached NCF to change scheduling for the region's youth to watch the Socceroos.
"We've had people ring up, but none of the clubs themselves, which is astonishing," Allen said.
"Once draws are done clubs can request to change them. But quite often they just have too many games and can't delay the earlier games."
