Kayaker had a whale of an adventure with migrating mammal

WE don't know who the intrepid kayaker was, but  we are confident he is still coming to terms with coming face-to-face with a playful humpback off the Coffs Coast.

Cheryl McLennan reached for her camera to record the meeting of fisherman and massive mammal last week from her vantage point on Sawtell's Bonville Headland.

She said rather than panic, the kayaker simply stayed still as the whale breached and then swam under him and out to sea.

To coincide with the peak season for the northerly winter migration, the Legendary Pacific Coast has launched a whale trail which plots the 50 best watching highlights between the Central Coast and Tweed Heads.

Bonville Headland at Sawtell is one of seven local vantage points and services included in the trail.
