Josh shares his story of ice use to help others

TEEN Challenge case worker Joshua Parkinson shares his story of ice addiction with his clients to help them understand they can also turn their lives around.

A 10-year addiction started when he was 17 and led to a life of crime and ultimately prison, after he lost his job and struggled to fund the cost of his addiction.

"The use was a cycle, you want that sense of euphoria... and not to think about every-day life," he said.

He was admitted to Teen Challenge's 12-month program the same day he was released from jail, a move he said changed everything.

"The only thing that helped me find peace in prison was the ministry services and visits from family. The detox you have in there is cold-turkey."

He is now counting down the weeks until his marriage to partner Donna.

The not-for-profit welcomes men aged 16-39 and women aged 16-29.

Mr Parkinson said clients found a schedule and routine as well as community work as they progressed through the program.

"Sometimes they aren't fully ready to commit when they first start. Some only last two weeks.

"Sharing my experiences gives them a taste of what's to come if they go down that track."

The service receives about 50 inquiries a week and houses 15 men, and currently, six women.

After renovations, the men's shelter will house 24 men.

Detox is required before entering the program.
