Fletcher to coach NCAS netball squad

ELITE netball coach Jon Fletcher has confirmed his availability to coach the Kempsey Macleay RSL Club sponsored North Coast Academy of Sport (NCAS) Netball Squad for its 2008-09 season.

Fletcher's history in elite netball includes head coach of the 2008 New South Wales Institute of Sport (NSWIS) Netball program, head coach NNSW 21 State team in 2009 and 2008 and head coach of the Hunter Jaegers team for 2006 and 2007.

Previous to these appointments, he was the high performance manager for Western Australia Netball, and Senior Coach at WA Institute of Sport Netball.

He has also held coaching and development positions in Tasmania, Northern Territory and the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).

“I'm very excited to be working with NCAS Netball,” Fletcher said.

“The role it plays in developing the talented North Coast junior players from association level through to State selection is important part of the success of the NSW Netball development plan.

“My role will be to not only oversee the design and delivery of a coaching program to help each player advance their skills and fitness but to also provide a strong mentor role to our four assistant coaches in the hope of up-skilling their knowledge and experiences as regionally based emerging coaches.”

The four assistant coaches include Leslie Kirk (Ocean Shores), Dianne Donovan (Lismore), Shirley Donovan (Lismore) and Karen Mills (Bellingen).

The program also has a new manager in Melissa Dundas (Lismore).

The squad which was selected late last year held an intense training session over the weekend at the Grafton Indoor Sports and Entertainment Centre.

A number of tours will also take place this year including the NIB Games in Newcastle in July and the ClubsNSW Academy Games in Armidale in April allowing NCAS Netball to test its skills against other regional academy squads throughout the State.

“We also plan on sending more NCAS netballers to the State team selection trials later this year,” Fletcher said.

“The North Coast has a great catchment area, dynamic local associations, talented emerging juniors and a very supportive and strong regional academy in NCAS.

“Our goal is to help NCAS continue to produce players with the potential for State and national selection.”

Local members of the current NCAS Netball Squad are Kate Brooke (Urunga), Lillian Dellar (Sawtell), Brooke Douglas (Boambee East) and Liza Goulding (Coffs Harbour).
