Key, Abbott pay respects at Australian War Memorial

NEW Zealand's Prime Minister John Key made a brief visit to Canberra on Wednesday to meet with Tony Abbott.

The whirlwind tour included a brief break for the two leaders to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Australian War Memorial.

While neither Mr Abbott nor Mr Key announced any new diplomatic measures, it is understood the meeting has strengthened the pair's existing relationship.

Mr Key was the first foreign leader to come to Canberra to meet with Mr Abbott since he was elected Prime Minister last month.
