John Butler's global surprise

IT WAS the surprise guest appearance that was hinted at but not guaranteed - and the crowd wasn't disappointed.

The Global Carnival was treated to a special performance when Australian music legend John Butler joined his wife "Mama Kin'' on the main stage for a few songs on Saturday afternoon.

Having successfully sung back the rain with her gutsy, very sassy performance, Mama Kin (aka Danielle Caruana) and Butler then seduced the sun out, leaving the soggy crowd smiling and steaming as they dried.

Things got wet again yesterday, when the magic of the carnival overflowed into the Bellinger River where the Leweton women from Vanuatu performed their traditional water music in the chilly shallows.

In spite of the clock change, an enthusiastic crowd lined the banks to watch the extraordinary spectacle.

Normally performed in the warmer waters surrounding their tropical island home, the six women braved the Bellinger, swaying, splashing and beating the water to create rhythms and sounds evoking their ancestors, environment and culture.

Spectators were full of praise for the moment, which turned the river briefly into a richly reverberating musical instrument.

Storms and showers did however mar what was otherwise a wonderful weekend of exquisite music and happy gatherings of people from around the globe.

Festival director Bryony Taylor said regardless of the weather, the atmosphere had been fantastic all weekend.

"The weather has certainly been unkind when we really didn't need it to be however everyone who was here had a fabulous and memorable time," Ms Taylor said.
