Jobs boom in creative industries

CREATIVITY is a booming industry on the Mid North Coast, with a new report showing employment in creative industries is growing faster here than in Sydney.

The NSW Creative Industries: Economic Fundamentals report found that, relative to all employment, the Mid North Coast experienced a 24 per cent growth in creative industry employment from 1996 to 2006.

The Mid North Coast had the third highest growth behind Richmond-Tweed and Illawarra, and ahead of Hunter and Sydney.

Coffs Harbour City Council has already recognised the value of creativity by initiating an online directory of the creative industries sector.

City Services Committee chair Bill Palmer said the directory features more than 230 individual listings in 82 sub-categories, offering the gamut of creative businesses and services.

“By putting together this directory, we're not only helping to advance the creative industries sector within Coffs Harbour, but also to increase business opportunities in general and stimulate economic growth,” Cr Palmer said.

And that growth is not over yet, with another report highlighting opportunities to further enhance the creative industries in NSW.

The NSW Creative Industries Insights paper includes options such as more education and training, direct funding of creative activities, development of strategic growth opportunities and greater co-ordination of creative industries promotion.
