THE man who killed Melbourne woman Jill Meagher in 2012 has won his appeal to have an unrelated rape conviction overturned.

The Victorian Court of Appeal on Tuesday knocked three years off  Adrian Earnest Bayley's 43-year minimum sentence after accepting Bayley's claim that there were significant issues with the evidence provided by a woman he was accused of raping in St Kilda 16 years ago.

According to the appeal documents, the "victim" of the 2000 rape told police 44-year-old  Bayley was her attacker after she read  about the Jill Meagher case on a Facebook-based missing person's site.

The ABC on Tuesday reported that the Court of Appeal  said the woman's identification evidence should not have been allowed at the jury trial.

They also found that there was no other evidence to allow a "properly instructed" jury to convict Bayley.

Bayley was sentenced to life behind bars after he pleaded guilty in April, 2013, to killing Ms Meagher who was a much-loved 29-year-old ABC employee.

He was sentenced to a minimum of 35 years behind bars.

Bayley was later  convicted of three rapes - one of which was the subject of his appeal.

The killer's appeals against the second rape conviction and the sentence for the third rape were dismissed.

The Victorian Coroner in May found Ms Meagher would still be alive if Bayley had not been released on parole. - ARM NEWSDESK
