Jetty production is a family affair
AFTER years of performing in plays separately, mother and daughter Jennifer Thompson and Summer White are treading the boards together in a local CHATS production of Cosi.
The pair have individually appeared in previous CHATS productions, including Two Floors Up, Autumn Song and Seven Little Australians, but it's the acclaimed Australian play by Louis Nowra that is finally putting the two on stage together.
"We are actually having a ball doing this play," Jennifer said. "I was expecting a bit of teenage angst but it's all been good."
Cosi is centred on patients in a mental institution who are putting on a production of the opera Cosi fan Tutte.
Jennifer plays obsessive- compulsive patient Ruth, while Summer plays the girlfriend of Lewis, the naive show director.
Jennifer, a teacher at Orara High School, said her role touched on a common anxiety.
"At first you want to laugh at Ruth because of her need to have everything perfect, but pretty soon you see how vulnerable she is and you realise there's a little bit of her anxiety in all of us."
In another family-first pairing, mother and son Allison and Daniel Lowden also appear. Alison plays Justine, an unconcerned social worker, and Daniel plays Lewis's smarmy best friend Nick.
Cosi opens July 20 at Jetty Memorial Theatre. To buy tickets, phone the box office 66528088 or visit www.jettytheatre.com. Discounted performances (all tickets $20) are on July 24 and 27.
