Jess is going the distance
FRIDAY the 13th is considered unlucky for many, but local Jess Deans proved you make your own luck at the NSW Catholic Primary Schools Cross Country Championships.
Black Friday this month was the date for the state event, held at Eastern Creek Raceway in Sydney.
Jess, a Year 5 student at St Francis Xavier Primary School, shoved off any dark clouds and showed her exceptional talent by taking out gold for the third consecutive year.
"Jess competed as an 11-year-old so the distance stepped up from 2km to 3km," mother Tracy Deans said.
"Jess regularly races the longer distances like the 5km in the Mid North Coast cross country series so she's very comfortable with a race that length.
"She led the race from the start and kept well ahead of the pack the whole way for a great finish."
The results are not too surprising for followers of the running star, with her performances in local competition very strong; securing consistent podium finishes against much older competitors.
Jess now will represent the NSW Catholic Primary Schools at the NSW All Schools PSSA Cross Country Championships at Eastern Creek on Friday, July 18.
"She'll be training hard with the Coffs Coast Flyers running squad and racing in the Mid North Coast and Woolgoolga Cross Country races in preparation.
"Jess really loves her running and is a strong and determined competitor.
"She's looking forward to All Schools next month and will give it her best as she always does."
