Jason Day coming home for Australian Open

THE Australian Open has secured another major signing with top-ranked Aussie star Jason Day committing to playing in the prestigious tournament later this year.

Day has confirmed he will line up in the Australian Open field alongside Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott when it is staged at the Australian Golf Course between November 23-26.

It will be a long-awaited homecoming for Day, the former world No.1 who is now ranked ninth in the world.

Day hasn't played on home soil since the summer of 2013, when he helped Australia win the World Cup of Golf in Melbourne by taking individual honours.

He also played in the Australian Open at Royal Sydney and finished tied sixth.

Day subsequently climbed to the top of world golf and held the No.1 ranking for 51 weeks between late 2015 and early 2017.

The 29-year-old Queenslander was set to play in the Aussie Open last year but a back injury forced him to withdraw. Injury also prevented a return in 2014 and the birth of second child Lucy put a line through 2015.

But barring more misfortune, Day going head-to-head with world No.2 Spieth should be a huge drawcard for Australian Open organisers.

Scott won the Stonehaven Cup in 2009 but Day is yet put to his name on the silverware, which contains some of the biggest names in world golf, including Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman and Gary Player.

It was undoubtedly this absence that drove Day to committing to playing in the Australian Open.
