Janiak targets Bellingen Cup

BOWRAVILLE racetrack is half a world away from Royal Ascot.

But Takeover Target's trainer, Joe Janiak, won't knock back the Diggers Tavern Bellingen Cup if he wins the prize at today's Nambucca River Jockey Club TAB meeting.

Janiak's entrant, Moveover Target, has just two things in common with her more illustrious stablemate - both are horses and share half a name - but the trainer gives his mare a first-rate chance of bringing home another feature race victory.

"The horse must love the track as her only two wins have been there and she ran a great race for third last start," the trainer said.

"Jockey Steve Traecey knows the mare well and they have a real good chance."

NRJC spokesman Greg Doolan said receiving SKY-2 coverage was a "tester".

"Before this, our only TAB meeting was the Bowraville Cup and they wanted us to hold this one at Coffs Harbour," he said.

"However, I got onto a few contacts in the industry and they agreed we could hold it at home and see what the holdings are like.

"If the turnover is good, it leaves the door open for more meetings."

This will be the 10th Bellingen Cup but the first as a 1000m dash.

"It started over 2200m, then switched to 1370m but never attracted the best horses," Doolan said.

"But this field is pretty good with the best horses about at the moment suited to sprinting, so we're really happy the top trainers like Bellamy, Janiak, Hodge and Shelton decided to nominate."
