It's time to enrol to vote
ENROL to Vote Week 2010 will run next month with the aim of enrolling thousands of high school students so they are ready to vote at the Federal Election that is expected to be called later this year.
Electoral Commissioner Ed Killesteyn said that over the past three years the AEC has partnered with close to 1800 schools to assist 58,823 eligible 17 and 18-year-old Australians with enrolling to vote.
Mr Killesteyn said that many 17-year-olds are not aware that they can enrol now and then vote as soon as they turn 18.
“This year ETVW will be focusing on reminding students ‘You never know when an election might be called!’ because if you wait for the election to be announced to enrol to vote – there is a chance you may miss out on having your say,” he said.
High schools across Australia are invited to register for this year’s ETVW, which will run May 17-23, by visiting the ETVW website www.enroltovoteweek.aec.gov.au.
AEC officers will be available to visit schools to assist students with completing their forms.
