It's fun to be a German in Coffs

The Coffs Coast Advocate

KURT and Lee Abend are spreading the word about how to have fun - in German.

The couple, both professional musicians, want to establish a community friendship group for German language speakers and people who want to speak and practise the language - and have a lot of fun at the same time.

Kurt and Lee recently organised a successful New Year's Eve event at the Boambee Community Centre which saw Bavarian-born chef Walter Kirsten in charge of the kitchen and the Abends in charge of the music, with dancing to 1am.

“We had an absolutely wonderful time,” said Kurt, who is planning the next Coffs community friendship day for the first weekend in May.

Pianist Lee and singer and multi-instrument player Kurt moved to Coffs Harbour four years ago on their second attempt at retirement. They already had many friends in the area, including former Grandma's Restaurant chef Walter Kirsten.

Anyone interested in finding out more about what is tentatively being called the German Austrian Swiss Friendly Club, can contact Kurt and Lee Abend on 6654 3374.
