Editorial - Saturday, June 7: Fair to say there’s plenty on

THE next time anyone says there's nothing do on the Coffs Coast feel free to grab today's Iconic Events feature and stage an intervention.

As well as boasting stunning beaches, headlands offering breathtaking vistas, luxurious rainforests and of course a plethora of shopping, dining and sporting experiences, our part of the world is home to gatherings to suit every flight of fancy.

The litany of events on the city's calendar is a fantastic celebration of our burgeoning diversity, but among them is one which will always have a place in the hearts of everyone with a penchant for Coffs Harbour's humble beginnings - the Orara Valley Fair.

It's not flash, overly sophisticated or weatherproof but it's passionately honest, defiantly home-grown and a whole lot of fun to boot.

With plenty of references to our farming past and no shortage of things to occupy and amaze the kids, the fair deserves to be as popular this long weekend Monday as it has been for the past 36 years.

Getting there is just as enjoyable. There's a free bus leaving Park Avenue at 10am and even the option of arriving by helicopter, although for me you just can't beat using the fair as an excuse to re-discover our glorious hinterland.
