Its all in the swing
SWINGFONIA is the Coffs Coast’s hot new choir and its director and 45 performers will stage their own show in Sawtell on the first day of spring, September 1.
Made up of regional singers from a range of musical backgrounds, united by their love of jazz and blues music, the group was formed in June specifically to sing at the Bellingen Jazz Festival.
Swingfonia sang last weekend at the Festival’s Butter Factory Marquee.
Combined with the “smokin’ hot keys” of talented local pianist Mei Wei Lim, Swingfonia will present its own concert at the First Avenue Cinema, Sawtell, at 7pm on September 1.
A grand piano will be specially brought in to heighten the excitement of the show, which will include a display of virtuosic jazz piano solos, some fine jazz solo singers, and of course, the 45-strong choir performing Mei’s own arrangements of swing, blues and Latin classics.
“We are pulling out all the stops to put on a sparkling show,” said Mei Wei Lim.
“This energetic and exciting group is a delight to work with.
“As the name Swingfonia suggests, we perform music mainly from the jazz swing era, including some Latin and blues. All arrangements are written by me, in three- part harmony (soprano, alto, baritone), to accommodate the range of people’s everyday voices, so the music is comfortable and enjoyable to sing.
“You will hear some of the most famous jazz tunes ever written for voice or piano.”
Tickets are $10, available from First Avenue Cinema, Sawtell ph 6653 3119, or from Mei Wei Lim 0434 850335, email: firstname.lastname@example.org
