Scott thinks of Macfarlane's defection as 'a compliment’

MARANOA MP Bruce Scott has taken Ian Macfarlane's defection to the Nationals Party as "a compliment" to the way the party runs.

Mr Macfarlane, the Member for Groom and a farmer, last week told the Liberal Party he would be moving to the Nationals.

In Queensland, the LNP is one party rather than a coalition like it is on a national level.

Mr Scott, who has known Mr Macfarlane since before they were both in politics, said the move was not that surprising if you knew Mr Macfarlane's background in agriculture.

"In relation to Ian, I've known long before I went into parliament," he said.

"We were both in the agri-political scene - he was part of the Grain Growth Association and I was president of the Maranoa Graziers and we worked well together.

"He understands rural issues and was always a defender and an advocate for rural issues.

"He's got a process to go through with his divisional council, but this is not like swapping from the Liberal Party to the Labor Party, because we are one party in Queensland."

The move has been described by Liberal Party members as "naked ambition" but Mr Scott said he took it as a sign the Nationals were heading in a good direction.

"With the south-east growing as it is and more seats going to the south-east corner, rural and regional seats are going to get smaller and I think that it's a compliment to the way we've operated in the National Party," he said.

"We've come from a party with 15 seats in 2007 to a party with 21 today."
