UPDATE: Did we catch you out with our April Fool's Day joke?
EARLIER: A new 20-story luxury holiday resort will be built in the midst of the Pioneer River to create a cool getaway destination for North Americans.
Alaska-based development company Oheckno has announced plans to capitalise on Mackay's tropical surroundings by building on Cullen Island - the small river island just opposite Caneland Central.
He said while the resort would be set in the tropics, its interior would be kept at a cool two degrees - making it more comfortable for North American visitors.
In a media statement, issued yesterday, Oheckno spokesman Seymour Fibbs said the central region was "overlooked", "untouched" and a "prime location" to tap into the North American tourist market.
The move has been welcomed as a shot in the arm for the Mackay region's struggling tourism industry.
Mr Fibbs said once the resort had been established, Oheckno would turn its attention to building a cruise ship terminal.
He admitted extensive dredging would need to take place in the Pioneer River to achieve this.
"We decided to build up rather than out because of the island's size", Mr Fibbs said.
