Iris shuts down QBL pre-season games

BASKETBALL: Mackay's Queensland Basketball League sides' 2018 season preparations have taken a hit, with games against Rockhampton cancelled for this Saturday.

Less than a month out from the QBL season, the Meteors and Meteorettes were scheduled to meet the Rockets and Cyclones respectively this Saturday night at the Crater as part of their pre-season schedule.

But with the threat of Tropical Cyclone Iris, Mackay Basketball business development manager Wade Rebetzke said that after speaking with emergency services on Wednesday the decision had been made to cancel both games.

"In the safety of all of our supporters and participants, including playing and coaching staff from Rockhampton, we have regretfully made the call to cancel our pre-season games against Rockhampton that were scheduled to take place this Saturday night," he said in a statement.

"Cyclone Iris is still a very indecisive, fluid system and the advice given to Mackay Basketball was that its path is very unpredictable, and there still could be plenty more rain and wind coming our way."

The cancellations are a hit for fans, with plenty of buzz for the sport created during the Australian Opals' Mackay Commonwealth Games camp over Easter.

Rebetzke said all tickets that have been purchased online for the matches will be refunded.
