Investing in job skilling

MACKAY-based mining technical services provider Mining Logic is competing against some of the heavyweights of the sector, with one the finalists in the Kinetic 2012 Training Awards employed by the family business.

Steven Sorrell is one of four finalists in the Apprentice/Trainee of the Year category, highlighting the high standards Mining Logic values in its staff and their work.

The 12-year-old company provides electrical, mechanical and technical trade services to the mining and resources sector, specialising in underground longwall support and project management.

Managing Director Glen George congratulated Steven on his nomination, saying it was a positive reflection on his commitment to his apprenticeship.

"Steven thoroughly deserves this recognition for his work," he said.

"For the company on the whole, it's fantastic to be put alongside some of the biggest operators in the industry.

"It proves that the smaller companies, like Mining Logic, can offer career opportunities on-par with the large multi-nationals."

Given the attention focused on the skills shortage, Kinetic Group CEO Derek Hunter said the finalists' recognition could not have come at a better time.

"The skills shortage is a household term these days, so now, more than ever it is important to showcase the achievements of those who are investing in skilling for the resources boom," Mr Hunter said.

"The Kinetic 2012 Training Awards provide a platform to showcase both individual and company-wide achievements in the Australian resources sector.

"In an environment where some companies are cutting training budgets it is encouraging to see the nominees' commitment to creating a more skilled workforce."

The award winners will be announced at a gala dinner in Brisbane on September 28.
