ONE of Australia's most inspiring atheletes arrives in Coffs Harbour today to give hope to others.

Tracy Barrell, who won two swimming gold medals at the Barcelona Paralympics in 1992 and was awarded the prestigious Order of Australia for her outstanding contribution to sports, will be a keynote speaker at tomorrow's My Choice Matters workshop.

The My Choice Matters workshop is designed to assist people with disability learn how they can have more control and more choice in how they live their lives. Tracy a triple congenital amputee, who uses a skateboard and scooter to get around, will co-facilitate the 'Living Beyond the Everyday' session.

Tracy said the My Choice Matters workshop would encourage people to think about their abilities instead of their disabilities as the state and federal governments move towards individualised funding and supports.

"People with disability and their families are used to being governed by disability services," Tracy said.

"But once we realise we can be in charge of things, many more opportunities arise. We can access all sorts of services and supports, much like everyone else. We don't have to be grouped into programs with other people with disability.

"I hope people with disability and their families leave the workshop with new understandings and a list of goals they want to work through."

The My Choice Matters workshop is on tomorrow between 10am and 330pm.
