Inquiry into inmates' sex claims

ALLEGATIONS of inappropriate sexual behaviour by a staff member towards inmates at the Acmena Juvenile Justice Centre are being investigated by police and the Juvenile Justice Department.

“Serious allegations” have been made against a staff member at Acmena. This staff member is still working within the department, but has been transferred while the investigation takes place, a representative for the Juvenile Justice Department said.

The allegations were reported to police, who will investigate and Juvenile Justice will also conduct its own investigation.

It is understood that two male inmates from Acmena were subject to sexually inappropriate behaviour from the staff member while away from the centre on an excursion to play indoor soccer.

The alleged offence took place the week before last, and the resulting investigations are still at a preliminary stage.

It is possible there is no substance to the allegations, the representative said.

An inside source at Acmena told The Daily Examiner the teenagers only had a short time to serve at the centre, which added credence to their claims.
