Innes questions flow of funds to Coffs surf club

DOES the Coffs Harbour Surf Club get special treatment from the city council?

That's what Cr Garry Innes wondered during debate at the council meeting on Thursday night about the awarding of a contract for further access upgrades at the Park Beach clubhouse.

"I have every respect for the surf club and the work its volunteer members do, but it seems that one club is always getting all the money," Cr Innes said.

He said all the city's five major clubs - the yacht, racing, golf, deep sea fishing and surf clubs - were facing difficult times due to issues about tenure associated with short leases.

"Most if not all of the money spent on the surf club recently has not been about increasing surf safety but in getting more people through the doors and to the restaurant and bar."

Cr Innes was the only councillor to vote against the recommendation to award the contract for the access upgrade.
