Indian captain Dhoni quits ODIs

CRICKET: Virat Kholi is the leading candidate to replace MS Dhoni as captain of the Indian one-day international and Twenty20 sides after the veteran wicketkeeper stepped down as skipper.

India will host England in ODI and T20 series starting on January 15.

The 35-year-old will make himself available for the three 50-over clashes and the three-match T20 series that follows.

In terms of victories he was the most successful captain in all three formats in Indian cricket history, and had been the captain of both of India's limited-overs sides since September 2007.

He took the reins for 60 Tests between 2008 and 2014.

During his time in charge India won the 2007 World Twenty20, 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy.

"The Indian team has touched new heights and his achievements will remain etched forever in the annals of Indian cricket,” said Rahul Johri, chief executive of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

Dhoni was captain of India in 199 ODIs and 72 T20 internationals.

He holds the record for the most international matches as captain with 331.
