Big Blueberry new Coffs icon

A GOLD Coast developer has won approval to add a major new tourist icon to the Coffs Harbour landscape; the Big Blueberry will soon be the city’s entry gateway from the south.

Filling the entire Englands Rd roundabout opposite Bunnings, the massive fibreglass blueberry will also house a visitor’s centre and an audiovisual display.

Reflecting the success and importance of the region’s fastest-growing export, the massive berry, expected to cost $650,000, will book-end Coffs Harbour in spectacular style with the Big Banana.

The concept will be complemented by a new residential subdivision at nearby Marshall’s Estate to be appropriately called Blueberry Hill.

‘Big Blue’, as it will be affectionately known, will be even more dazzling after sundown when thousands of sparkling lights will dazzle the night sky.

The consortium behind the project, Vaccinium, is delighted to get the go-ahead after months of negotiations.

“The Big Banana has been such a powerful brand for Coffs, we’d love to end up with a complete ‘big fruit salad’ there,” said a company spokesperson.

Visitors to Big Blue will be treated to lavish servings of the Corindi plateau’s famous rabbit-eye blueberries smothered in local banana custard with a side serve of Dorrigo cheese.
