Maserati driver busted doing 156kmh on highway stretch

A MASERATI driver doing 156kmh is just one of a number of drivers caught speeding well above the limit on the newly opened Nambucca to Urunga Pacific Highway upgrade.

The driver of the luxury vehicle, a 39-year-old Queensland man, was fined $2350 and had his licence suspended on the spot for six months.

Shortly after the driver was nabbed this morning, a P-plater clocked at 135kmh was fined $835 and had his licence suspended for three months, also in the 100kmh zone of the highway upgrade.

We previously reported a green P-plater driving as fast as 165kmh was also stopped by police less than 48 hours after the upgrade opened last Friday.

Coffs-Clarence Highway Patrol warned drivers police were actively patrolling the new roadway.

"Although it's an upgraded road and a dual carriageway, police are still actively patrolling and we have a number of extra police on the roads," highway patrol sergeant Mark Andrews said.

"We want drivers to be mindful that this is not a race track and to think about the consequences of their actions when on the roads.

"Driving above the speed limit can mean even the slightest problem can become a serious - even fatal - accident."
